Technical Information

Forged Friends

Todays Forged Friends are the culmination of nearly 30 years of refinements on the original world beating units that emerged from Ray Jardines workshop in the early '70s.

Since that time they have evolved from the original unit which revolutionised the climbing world, into a staple for modern climbers everywhere and are the workhorse of Wild Country's Spring Loaded Camming Devices (SLCD) range.

The modern Forged Friend may look like a work of art but stil incredibly functional...

And although Ray would recognise this shiny modern unit as an inheritor of all the key features of the original he launched with Wild Country in 1978, these have certainly been brought up to date with the latest technology.

So along with the Original 13.75 degree camming angle, floating trigger and predictable loading of the 70's unit this modern Friend has a host of new features.

These include camstops, a 12mm Dyneema sling, a stronger axle and superb bright colour coding to make your life safer, quicker, stronger and lighter than ever before.

A favorite of the Desert climbers of Utah, the wallers of 'the Valley' and many other places besides, the modern Forged Friends are still acknowledged as one of lightest and most durable SLCD's available today.

These units are the workhorse of the Wild Country Friend range and are also one of the best value units around making them a great choice for now....and for a long time to come...but don't just take our word for it...

Forged Friends 2 and 3
"I remember when Friends appeared in the late 1970s. Back then I climbed in EB rock shoes, flared jeans and a tie dyed shirt, and I drove a VW van. The shoes and clothes wore out long ago and the van broke down too. But I’ve still got most of my original Friends on my rack, 23 years later."
Greg Child
"Rigid stem Friends, the original design, have a reputation for predictability and durability. They are also lighter than most other cams of comparable size. Once fitted with the " Gunks tie – off " ( stem tied off with a sling through the hole near the head), rigid stems are more durable than any flexible stem if you are logging a lot of airtime with horizontal placements."
Clyde Soles, Rock & Ice 109.
